PARIAH

Adepero Oduye portrays Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents and younger sister in Brooklyn.  Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the sometimes boisterous support of her best friend, out lesbian Laura (Pernell Walker), Alike is especially eager to find a girlfriend. At home, her parents’ marriage is strained and there is further tension in the household whenever Alike’s development becomes a topic of discussion. Pressed by her mother into making the acquaintance of a colleague’s daughter, Bina (Aasha Davis), Alike finds Bina to be unexpectedly refreshing to socialize with. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity – sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.

Pariah premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival   and was awarded the Excellence in Cinematography Award. In his New York Times article, film critic A.O. Scott wrote that to watch Adepero Oduye play Alike “is to experience the thrill of discovery.” Scott continued by saying that “Pariah has a point to make, and a point of view to argue, but it also, above all, wants to illuminate an individual universe of meaning and emotion.” Adepero Oduye was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead

Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased by sending a check to LICF (697 West Montauk Highway, Bay Shore NY 11706) or at the door the night of the event.

After an hour long skate, we headed off to Friday’s for a fabulous lunch (of course without fail one person wanted to stay and sip hot coco but yet again they were outvoted).  As I was driving home, I thought ’there is no better way to spend a Saturday than with those you love’.

LICF Family Vacation 2009

As the days drew near for the annual family vacation, we were all counting down to the moment our plane would depart, hoping to leave the gate on time so we wouldn’t disappoint our awaiting fans and paparazzi by arriving late (in case you were wondering, no one was waiting for us except the rain drops).  As we landed in Los Angeles, 6 long hours from the time we left NY, vacation had officially begun.  The palm trees and Hollywood hills greeted us from the plane; what a beautiful view.  Three fun filled sunny days of sightseeing at the Hollywood sign, Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Grauman Theatre (just to name a few) were had before we disembarked for our cruise to the Mexican Riviera. 

Then off to a seven day cruise to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta was filled with fun, laughter, a marriage proposal, sightseeing, food, food, and more food. Some of us watched movies together while others caught the Broadway show.  One of the special nights was when Kathy proposed to Melissa and our whole family celebrated their engagement over dinner. 

Another night a group of us attended a “Murder Mystery Dinner”, which gave us a chance to role play and be silly.  At the ports of call we enjoyed sightseeing, exploring the island and meeting the locals. 

Vacation is always a great time; however, vacation with a family that you share your life with is such an amazing experience.  It is a a great time had by the whole family.

We can’t wait for next year’s adventure.  It will be a Cruise to Alaska!  We hope you can help us create more family memories!
