downloadWith an Iconic name, matinee idol looks, a quick wit and a generous heart, James Stewart is an excellent example of Long Island’s best….

The pride of Jack and Mary Stewart, Jim is one of 8 siblings and the second half of twins (yes, there’s two of them!). James was born in Levittown into a loving, tight knit family and was raised with a deep moral code and his Catholic school education from 1st grade through college has helped reinforce his beliefs

James became a member of the Nassau County Police Department in 1986 and served for 17 years in the 3rd precinct  before retiring due to injury. He was an accredited instructor in the department and the recipient of several awards including the department’s second highest honor, The Medal of Distinguished Service.

In 2011, James joined the Long Island Gay & Lesbian Film Festival as a programmer and was quickly elevated to Program Director. James was promoted to Executive Director in 2012 as the Festival began its 16th year and has worked tirelessly to continue the tradition of bringing quality LGBT cinema to Long Island and promoting the Long Island Gay & Lesbian Film Festival as the premier Arts Event on Long Island.

Those that have worked alongside him sing his praises, as Eddie Finan puts it “James is a professional when it comes to any task. He crosses every T and dots every I. But he always injects his unique brand of humor into his work. He makes everyone laugh and enjoy the work which we are doing. James is a true leader.

James has been honored by many LGBT organizations for his contributions to our community, Auntie M’s Helping Hands and the LI Raven’s MC just to name a few. He is a great supporter of Long Island Community Fellowship and has participated in our Thanksgiving Food Drive as well as our Family Christmas. Whenever we have identified a need in our community his response has always been immediate ” How can I help?”. Our Senior Deacon Emeritus Bill Hahn expressed it best ” Jim has a heart of gold and will do anything to help anyone and or organization in the LGBT community and I feel blessed to call him my friend.

Jim  is most proud of celebrating 13 years with his partner James and on July 6, 2015 he proposed on the beaches of Cape May. We wish them both a lifetime of happiness.
